SC allows Income Tax to reopen a tax case against Amitabh Bachchan

NEW DELHI || In a major setback to acclaimed Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Income Tax (IT) department to reopen a tax case against him pertaining to his income for the assessment year 2001-02.

amitabhyudhA bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and PC Pant upheld two orders of Mumbai’s Income Tax Commissioner directing fresh assessment of tax liability of the Bollywood actor. The apex court allowed two separate appeals filed by Income Tax Department and set aside the orders of the Bombay High Court and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

It deliberated on various provisions of the tax law to allow the appeal of the Income Tax department whose plea was dismissed by the High Court.
